The Uganda Press Photo Award Photojournalism Workshop 2014

With the generous support of the U.S. Mission in Kampala the FCAU was able to run a series of two workshops for professional photojournalists earlier this year. The first workshop took place in Gulu and the second one was organized in Kampala. Professionals working for different media houses as well as freelancers and independent photographers attended both.
The programs of the workshops were developed and run by two Ugandan photojournalists and FCAU members, Edward Echwalu (Reuters) and Isaac Kasamani (AFP). Even though the workshops were brief, lasting 3 days each, the program was very ambitious and was designed to cover a range of subjects such as maximizing the performance of any camera including simple point-and-shoots, which are common working tools for many Ugandan photojournalists.
Moreover the participants learnt more about the importance and art of captioning, working on photo essays and longer and more in-depth photo assignments, and the ethics of photojournalism, which both times provoked a very lively discussion. Apart from theory the participants also had two practical assignments. Jimmy Adriko, photo editor of the New Vision, was pleased with the effect the workshops had on his photographers, saying, “The feedback from the training was exciting- the team came back fired up!”
