As an organisation, we are proud to represent journalists based in Uganda who work for international media. But we have long felt that our name – the Foreign Correspondents’ Association of Uganda – does not reflect the diversity of our membership. We are open to anyone, regardless of nationality. Many of our members are Ugandans, reporting from their country, about their country, for a global audience. The word “foreign correspondent” doesn’t sound quite right.
We are therefore changing our name to the International Press Association of Uganda (IPAU), starting today. We will continue to be a voice for journalists working for international media, and we will continue to stand up for press freedom in Uganda. The name has changed, but our values remain the same.
