Mwesigwa selected by the jurors as the overall winner from 29 winners across seven categories (full list below). He works for Vision Group, and has a degree in fine art from Makerere University, majoring in photography.
All the winners were announced at an awards ceremony held at Makerere University Art Gallery, and the winners’ exhibition, including all the winning images, was launched at the same occasion.
The Uganda Press Photo Award (UPPA) is organised by the Foreign Correspondents’ Association of Uganda (FCAU), in partnership with Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung and the US Mission in Uganda, and with support from Definition Africa. The Uganda Press Photo Award started in 2012, and 2014 is the third.
FCAU’s co-chair, Malcolm Webb, who is also a correspondent for Al Jazeera English TV, said, “The Awards have gone from strength to strength each year. This year over 700 images were submitted, which is more than double what we received last last year. Also the standard of the entries is high, and growing higher.”
Edward Echwalu, a FCAU member and one of Uganda’s most renowned photojournalists, who works for Reuters and other publishers, said, “The Uganda Press Photo Award provides a unique platform that recognises the creative work of photojournalists in Uganda, something that was previously lacking.”
The Uganda Press Photo Award has been trending on Twitter with the has tag #UPPA14
The exhibition of winning images will run at the Makerere University Art Gallery until 8th November.
